Backpacker travel insurance customers with a green conscience may like to spend a night or two in a Wellington hostel after hearing it was named as the best in its category for sustainable tourism.
YHA Wellington City won the Best Large Accommodation category at the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards 2009 yesterday in London.
Chris Sperring, manager of the New Zealand hostel, said the award was recognition of the energy and enthusiasm of both guests and staff.
He praised his employees for endeavouring to make a stay in the hostel more than just a bed for the night and added that he hoped their work is more than just a job.
"This is a big city hostel, so it doesn't necessarily fit the typical eco-hostel stereotype, but that hasn't stopped us from making sustainability central to everything we do," noted Mr Sperring.
According to the Youth Hostel Association website, the Wellington hostel offers a wide range of accommodation, from four-bed ensuite rooms to deluxe private rooms.
