Backpackers looking to enjoy Labour Weekend in Gisborne, New Zealand, should ensure they have
backpacker travel insurance before setting off.
The Gisborne Herald reports that despite indications that the weather may not hold, a host of events are planned to celebrate the occasion. A large BMX biking competition will be held, as well as a Maori Battalion book launch and the Gisborne Wine and Food Festival. The events draw crowds from far and wide, and most of the hotel accommodation is booked up for the duration of the weekend. Authorities say there may still be backpacker rooms available.
Graham Breckell, chief executive of Tourism Eastland, told the paper: "She's all pretty full in this town for the weekend, apart from a couple of bed and breakfasts and possibly backpackers."
More than 3,000 tickets have been sold to the weekend's events, and the town is expected to be bustling with activity throughout.
Travellers looking to take part in the festivities should make sure they have
backpacker travel insurance, especially if they choose to stay in communal hostels.
