The Milford Sound in the Fiordland region has been shortlisted in a search for the new seven natural wonders of the world.
Destination Fiordland manager Lisa Sadler described the accolade as "the latest acknowledgement of Milford Sounds exceptional beauty".
The contest defines a "natural wonder" as a place that has not been created or significantly altered by humans.
Over 441 places were nominated but the list has been whittled down by travel experts to a final 28.
The Grand Canyon in the US and Australia's Great Barrier Reef were also among those who made the shortlist.
Winners will be announced in 2011 and organisers are inviting people from around the world to vote online for their favourite.
