New figures from the country's tourism ministry revealed that the Land of the Long White Cloud's pacific neighbours keep their wallets firmly closed while on holiday.
Bruce Bassett, the ministry's head of tourism, said: "A lot of Australians just come for a short stay."
"They're not wining and dining, shopping, booking into hotels or flying around the country at anywhere near the same rate as pure holidaymakers," he added.
Tourism executives had recently launched a new campaign encouraging foreign visitors to visit their friends and families in New Zealand.
The Great Kiwi Invite allows New Zealanders to send an animated e-card to international friends, automatically offering them the chance to win a pair of flights to the country.
