Backpackers planning to take part in fun activities in New Zealand hostels could first buy
online travel insurance.
According to the Marlborough Express, a backpacker team formed one of the crews that took part in a pirate race on the Taylor River in the Blenheim region of New Zealand.
The Groovy Train, a team comprising Israeli, English and German travellers from the Grovetown Backpackers hostel, entered the More FM Raft Race using a raft made of wood, an old sign and a collection of beer barrels.
Rafters raced from Beaver Road bridge and the competition was eventually won by family team the Rats' Pack in just under 15 minutes.
Prizes were awarded in a series of categories, including last to finish the race and design nods for the best rafts.
Hostels are a popular choice among backpackers as they frequently offer a communal atmosphere as well as budget accommodation. In addition, many towns have community activities that give travellers the chance to meet locals.
