Worldwide travel insurance is always an option for people planning to follow the crowds and head to Rotorua in New Zealand's North Island.
The Daily Post reports that despite the global downturn, many motels and hostels in the town were booked up and backpackers even had to be turned away over the Easter weekend.
Cactus Jack Backpackers was forced to turn away 50 travellers as they had reached capacity, while some private residents even offered to put people up to help with the surplus of guests hoping for a bed.
KiwiPaka, another hostel in the town, reported that just under half of its guests over the weekend were New Zealanders, as Rotorua proves popular as a family holiday destination offering a variety of activities.
Spending also increased in the town's restaurants as guests - many of whom may have purchased
backpacker travel insurance - sought their evening meals.
Rotorua is renowned for its volcanic mud pools, which bubble and produce a strong smell of sulphur.
