Backpackers are advised to seek
cheap travel insurance before journeying to New Plymouth, the New Zealand city that has recently received numerous plaudits.
New Zealand magazine North and South voted New Plymouth Top Town in the country, beating both the capital Wellington and second-city Auckland. The city has also been shortlisted in the Whole City Award at the International Awards for Liveable Communities, and was the only city in New Zealand to receive the nod.
Peter Tennent, mayor of New Plymouth, said: "Those of us that live here have never been in any doubt of how fantastic this place is, but it is wonderful to have independent judging attesting just that."
The city scored the highest marks in a series of categories including employment opportunities, lifestyle, economic growth and facilities, economy and affordable housing.
The accolades may prompt visits from more backpackers and travellers keen to experience the country beyond the extreme sports of Queenstown and the volcanic sights of Rotorua.
All travellers are advised to seek
