NZPA reports that Scottish backpacker Mark Hillson is now leading a golfing competition taking place at Terrace Downs Golf Club near Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island.
The Scot has a world amateur ranking of 288 but hit a four under-par 69 to emerge top of the national golfing tournament.
Two shots separate Mr Hillson from Waipukurau golfer Pieter Zwart after the Scot, who is travelling through the country with friends, struck five birdies.
New Zealand is a hugely popular backpacker destination, with Queenstown dominating the tourist sector on South Island due to its rich mix of adrenalin-fuelled activities such as bungee jumping and white-water rafting.
