A German backpacker's car accident in New Zealand reveals the need for
online travel insurance.
Hawke's Bay Today reports that Anja Bauerfeld, a 19 year-old German backpacker, was involved in an accident with a bus heading towards Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. According to the teenage driver, she and the bus both initially stopped but then the bus tried to move past on the narrow lane and crashed into the car.
Ms Bauerfeld claims, however, that whilst the bus driver admitted liability at the time, he later changed his story and said that the accident was her fault.
An insurance company is now investigating, but the incident reveals the need for backpackers to get hold of
cheap travel insurance, especially if they plan to hire a car for winding mountain roads.
Ms Bauerfeld has paid nearly $900 to fix her car, although luckily neither her nor her two passengers were hurt in the accident.
Backpackers should consider buying
worldwide travel insurance before heading to New Zealand.
