The country has won yet another accolade, this time as the favourite long-haul destination from readers of the Observer, and both the print and online editions of the Guardian. Tourism New Zealand has recently spent over $7 million on a new promotional campaign that intends to appeal to backpackers and other tourists by using personal testimonies from real-life travellers.
Damien O'Connor, minister for tourism, said: "Of note is that this win comes in the face of flattening visitor numbers from the UK, New Zealand's second-largest tourist market."
The country has been showered with awards in recent weeks, perhaps most notably from renowned backpacker guide Lonely Planet.
New Zealand remains hugely popular as a tourist destination for both backpackers and higher-end visitors. Stunning scenery and a host of extreme sports have heightened its appeal among young people such as those seeking adventure on a gap year before heading for university.
