Backpackers planning to travel around New Zealand by 'carpooling', or sharing vehicles with a number of other people, could buy one-way travel insurance first.
Jayride, an online ride-sharing company based in Auckland, is looking to promote carpooling by organising a trip from Auckland all the way down to Queenstown in the middle of South Island. The trip will leave on January 26th and the company is looking to tour a series of famous locations throughout the country while drawing attention to carpooling as an environmentally-conscious way to travel.
Rod Bishop, a co-founder of Jayride, said: "If Jayride makes it from Auckland to Queenstown filling spare seats for the whole trip it will show ride-sharing works by proving that Kiwis can share any ride they want, whenever they want."
Sharing vehicles suits people travelling on a budget and also throws lots of like-minded travellers together to socialise. People could buy
backpacker travel insurance beforehand as well.
Jayride has a membership of nearly 1,500, who between them organise nearly 15,000 carpooling trips each year.
