Backpackers heading to New Zealand are advised to make sure they seek
cheap travel insurance for specialist activities and to ensure they are well prepared.
According to Stuff.co.nz, authorities in the country's North Island have warned travellers about the potential dangers of mountain-climbing in the region, especially in relation to Mount Taranaki, a picturesque peak in the west of the country. A 56 year-old hiker was recently killed in a flash-flood on the mountainside, while the Taranaki Alpine Club have had to help climbers dressed only in shorts and t-shirts in the past few days.
Sergeant George White, liaison for the Taranaki Alpine Cliff Rescue Team, told the website: "If you are not used to the conditions, heading up there without the proper equipment and experience - it is a recipe for disaster."
Sergeant White added that weather conditions can change very quickly on the mountainside and travellers should be wary of the risks and ensure they know what they're doing. Specialist
backpacker travel insurance is recommended for those who are well prepared.
