Fourcorners.co.nz reports that Air New Zealand has decided to increase services to Queenstown in the country's South Island in time for the New Zealand winter in a few months time.

The extra service will comprise a direct flight between Brisbane, Australia and the South Island resort town, which is immensely popular among backpackers from all over the world.

Graham Budd, general manager marketing for Destination Queenstown, told the website: "This vote of confidence from our national carrier reinforces the work we have been doing and underpins the resilience of the Queenstown tourism product."

He added that the additional flight would help to promote Queenstown in Australia and sell the notion of a unique winter experience in the heart of South Island. Worldwide travel insurance could benefit holidaymakers.

Queenstown is nestled in a spectacular natural setting and is surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range. Backpackers head there for white-water rafting and bungee jumping.
