There was no shortage of rooms available in New Zealand hostels in March for people seeking accommodation, many of whom may have benefited from
worldwide travel insurance.
Room occupancy throughout the country hit an eight-year low in March, with an 11 per cent fall in international guest nights.
Some backpackers may consider this good news, however, as there could be a stronger likelihood of finding a room over the New Zealand winter months if they plan to brave the global downturn and head out for a skiing trip.
Regions such as the Bay of Plenty in the country's North Island, as well as Canterbury and Otago, experienced the most significant declines in guest nights.
The country is traditionally one of the most popular destinations in the world for backpackers, many of whom buy one-way travel insurance, with Queenstown in the South Island a notorious centre of youth activity.
