Backpackers planning to take advantage of storage-unit accommodation in Queenstown, New Zealand, have the option of buying
worldwide travel insurance.
The Otago Daily Times reports that QBox Ltd has applied for permission to convert a series of storage shipping containers into budget accommodation in the tourist centre of New Zealand's South Island.
The company plans to convert 70 containers and provide 140 beds, complete with windows, en suite bathrooms and patios, in a move that could appeal to backpackers with
cheap travel insurance.
According to the paper, a report on the matter from Lakes Environmental said: "The logic of the low-cost building type, the intended clientele and intent to market the 'container village' image as a fun, temporary place to live promises to overcome possible objections."
The containers cost up to $4,000 (£1,578) to buy and then considerable investment would be needed to offer decent accommodation that would be aimed at backpackers and temporary workers.
Queenstown is renowned for both its stunning landscapes and its extreme sports, with bungee jumping particularly popular among backpackers.
