Backpackers with
worldwide travel insurance may be interested by the news that a new visitor centre is set to open at the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves in New Zealand.
Designed to give visitors a more in-depth look at the caves, the environmental building will blend in with its surroundings and is expected to offer a new restaurant with a barbecue menu.
Grant Webster, chief executive of developer THL, said: "Waitomo Glow Worm Caves is a uniquely New Zealand experience and we believe this complex will significantly enhance a visitor's experience of Waitomo.
"This multi-million dollar complex will become an iconic New Zealand tourist attraction in its own right."
The Waitomo glow worm, known scientifically as Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to the country and can be seen en masse during a 45-minute boat tour of the underground spectacle, a fact that could interest those buying
backpacker travel insurance.
New Zealand opera singer Kiri Te Kanawa once performed in the cathedral cavern at Waitomo, the Glow Worm Caves website states.
