The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has today (August 18th) advised Britons intending to travel outside western Europe to ensure they have medical cover in their travel insurance policy.
Recent research from Defaqto revealed that one in seven people fail to take out travel insurance before they head off on their summer break.
But ABI spokesman Malcolm Tarling has explained that with medical costs in certain countries being so extortionate, taking the appropriate precautions is absolutely essential.
He said: "Different countries do present different risks. The further afield you travel - i.e. outside Western Europe - the more important medical expenses cover is, for example especially if travelling to Africa, and Asia.
"And of course, with the danger of very expensive medical bills, having adequate medical expenses cover is vital when travelling to USA."
Mr Tarling added that in some parts of the world - especially major cities - travellers may be particularly vulnerable to criminals, such as pickpockets, so having backpacker travel insurance to cover possessions is also vital.
