A leading figure in the travel industry has today (August 13th) listed getting travel insurance one of the main priorities for British holidaymakers this summer.
Recent research has revealed that a whopping one in four Britons (13.4 million people) will jet off without ensuring that they have cover in place.
However, Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), has explained that many of those people could discover that they have made an expensive mistake.
She told BBC News: "Despite the risk of facing bills that could bankrupt you, millions of people from the UK, for the sake of a few pounds, travel abroad uninsured.
"The Foreign Office estimate that an air ambulance from the USA's east coast could cost between £35-45,000 - not an extra holiday expense anyone wants to plan for."
Ms Tuke also added that unless travellers have taken out annual travel insurance, they can leave themselves exposed if they do not secure a policy before their trip.
The same undoubtedly applies to gappers preparing to head off on their year out, with backpacker travel insurance a must to cover all possible eventualities.
