Britons are radically changing the way they go on holiday, according to new research released today (August 14th).
A study by Cater Allen Private Bank showed that 63 per cent no longer want to have a break in Europe this summer, with their sights set further afield.
A total of 26 per cent claimed that they fancy a holiday off the beaten track, while 20 per cent said that they were looking for adventure.
This view is backed up by the fact that 69 per cent claimed that they dislike crowds of tourists and 51 per cent said that they wanted to head somewhere that is unspoilt.
Sally Ann Watts, head of marketing at the bank, said: "This research shows that Britons are moving away from traditional holidays and becoming aspirational in their holiday choices."
The thirst for adventure is clear, with 22 per cent wanting to holiday in the mountains, ten per cent on safari, 11 per cent in the rainforest and ten per cent on activity holidays.
It must be emphasised that with so many people looking to take such gap year-style holidays, taking out backpacker travel insurance is absolutely essential.
