Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, said: "You are not going to be the only person who comes through there; your behaviour can have an enormous impact on the perception of your country."
People need to understand the culture of their destination before arriving, added Mr Hall, who suggested reading up on local habits and customs or talking to those who have already been to the area.
"The more you find out about places, the more you will get out of it," he said.
A recently released report from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office found Britons are continuing to get into trouble abroad.
According to the British Behaviour Abroad study, a particular concern is rising numbers of drink and drug-related incidents.
