British backpackers planning to head off on their travels this summer have been warned to make sure they are covered for all activities they plan to undertake on their trip.
With the nation currently experiencing an exodus as school leavers and university graduates set off on their gap years or summer breaks, failing to secure travel insurance is clearly not an option.
However, with some travellers intending to take on exotic or adventurous activities, in certain cases backpacker travel insurance may provide more appropriate cover than a regular policy.
Emma Lunn from Fool.co.uk has explained that she could have been the victim of such an oversight when she headed to South Africa and assumed she was fully covered by the insurance provided by her current account.
She said: "I threw caution to the wind and when I wasn't teasing crocodiles I was sand-boarding, climbing mountains, mountain biking, or on a camping safari in blissful ignorance of whether [my bank] would pay up in the event of a mishap."
A recent study by price comparison website Moneysupermarket.com suggested that 14 per cent of British holidaymakers have never taken out travel insurance.
