With British backpackers heading off to far-flung corners of the globe in their droves this summer, a leading travel firm has issued some crucial advice.
Trailfinders has warned travellers not to take expensive items with them on their trip and to ensure that what they do take is covered by adequate
backpacker travel insurance.
The more adventurous backpackers who will be looking to get involved in extreme sports have also been advised to ensure that their policy covers various medical aspects, such as a 24-hour helpline.
A spokesperson for the company said: "A backpacker traveller is a very different type of traveller to someone who is on a two week holiday in Europe," he said.
"Backpackers tend to go to more remote locations, will make more use of local transport, and are a bit more adventurous and therefore need a very different type of policy to someone who's been to a five-star hotel for a few days in the middle of a major city within Europe."
Recent research from the AA revealed that the average backpacker carries around £450 worth of goods on their travels, such as mobile phones and mp3 players.
