Backpackers currently travelling in Thailand have been warned to steer clear of Bangkok as anti-government protests take place in the centre of the city.
The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has been campaigning vigorously for the resignation of current prime minister Samak Sundaravej.
They claim that he is too closely linked to former incumbent Thaksin Sinawatra, who is currently in exile in England as he faces charges relating to financial malpractice during his time in office.
A court order has been issued against protestors, while warrants have also been put out for their arrests and 1,000 riot police were deployed on Monday (August 25th).
Despite this, around 10,000 protestors were reported to have gathered in the centre of the city in the region of the Government House and in Sundaravej's office compound.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has the following advice for travellers: "There is the possibility of violent clashes between protestors and the police. You should exercise caution, avoiding this area and any other demonstrations or large gatherings of people."
Anyone in or planning to travel to Bangkok would also be prudent to ensure they are covered by a comprehensive
