Kate Mossman, a spokesperson for ethical travel company i-to-i, said gappers could also take a combination of payment methods, including cash, credit and debit cards and travellers' cheques, to avoid getting caught out.
Ms Mossman said many young travellers run into trouble when they try and include visits to as many countries as possible in a short space of time and consequently run out of money.
She advised those planning a trip to get fundraising, not only to ensure the project is adequately funded, but also to raise awareness about any voluntary work or charities backpackers plan to get involved with.
"It's amazing how many people get on board once you try and get a lot of support," she added.
