Gap year travel insurance customers hoping to spend their time abroad on a grand tour of Europe may find that they can enjoy the sights without crowds of tourists.
According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), Britons travelling on the continent can visit traditional tourist destinations without the distraction of crowds of other holidaymakers, due to the recession.
Kate Kenward, executive director at AITO, said: "Europe will always be popular for Brits and if the numbers are less, touring major cities and attractions which have been known to be busy in the past will be a joy."
Those more concerned about finding some winter sun, meanwhile, can look to destinations just outside the eurozone, such as Egypt and Turkey, for low-cost beach holidays, she suggested.
Ms Kenward explained that holiday operators are now "savvier" about currency fluctuations, meaning that they are likely to keep prices for next year relatively low.
