Holidaymakers may want to take out
backpacker travel insurance before going off the beaten track in Mexico.
According to the Latin American nation's tourism board, British travellers are increasingly choosing to ditch beach breaks and explore the country's culture.
Manuel Diaz Cebrian, UK and Europe director of the Mexico Tourism Board, said he had seen a "noticeable shift", as people realise "what else Mexico offers - our culture and varied landscape from jungles and forests to volcanoes and Aztec ruins".
He added that the country's sunny weather would be a strong draw for British tourists in forthcoming months.
"Our winter attractions centre primarily on our climate - something that obviously most European destinations are unable to offer," he explained.
Mr Diaz Cebrian added that Britons would find much to explore on the country's "enviable and varied coastline", much of which remains "unspoilt ... authentic Mexico".
A trip to Mexico would also be a good bet financially, according to new figures, as the pound is currently 9.75 per cent stronger against the peso than it was last year.
