Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, said: "We have seen examples of people getting into trouble for overstepping the mark for behaviour that would be acceptable in other parts of the world."
According to Mr Hall, holidaymakers hoping to "let their hair down" should remember that getting drunk is frowned upon in places such as Dubai.
"You might party a little bit harder than you would at home and it's understandable that when you go on holiday, you want to let yourself off the leash," he added.
His comments follow the release of the British Behaviour Abroad report from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The study found Britons were most likely to get arrested in the United Arab Emirates, Thailand and the US.
