Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com, said that "employers like the life skills that you develop when you're overseas".
Mr Griffiths said that those who have received a redundancy payment could invest the money in a plane ticket.
"As long as you can cover the costs of your flights out there, within reason you can get anywhere around the world on a single or return flight for less than a thousand pounds," he said.
Young professionals may find that they may not even have to pay for flights if they have skill sto offer a voluntary project abroad, Mr Griffiths added.
Recent research published by currency exchange firm Travelex suggests that just over three-quarters of those recently made redundant would like to use their free time to travel.
One in ten of those surveyed saw the recession as a positive opportunity to build on their experience and try something different.
