A travel expert has said despite recent price increases India still offers independent backpackers good value for money,
gap year travel insurance customers may be interested to hear.
Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2010 named India as one of its top ten places where visitors can get more for their money.
Tom Hall, the publisher's travel editor, said while the subcontinent is not as universally cheap as it once was, bargains can still be found at high-end destinations or in "backpacker havens", such as Goa and Pushkar.
He noted that cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta remain highly popular among Britons, while others looking for a beach break choose Goa or Kerala.
"For people who are slightly more adventurous, going up to the Himalayas and doing some trekking is something that has been on travellers' radar for a few years," he added.
