British holidaymakers looking to get away for a bank holiday break this weekend could face chaos at Gatwick and Stansted airports.
Baggage handlers and check-in staff at the airports have announced a strike which is set to take place on the Monday (August 25th).
According to trade union Unite, the possible action is a result over an ongoing pay dispute, with a further walkout on Friday (August 29th) also possible.
National officer Steve Turner said: "Our members are already struggling to keep up with rising food and energy costs.
"Our members have had enough; the liberalisation of ground handling services across UK airports has resulted in a race to the bottom which must and will stop."
Staff are said to be insulted by employer Swissport's offer of a three per cent pay rise, and 70 per cent of the 300 union members at Gatwick voted in favour of the strike.
The volatile and sudden nature of the situation highlights the importance of securing a
cheap travel insurance policy which protects against flight cancellations.
