People concerned about suffering from bed bug bites in UK hotels could benefit from buying
cheap travel insurance.
The Independent reports that over a dozen hotels in London alone have suffered from bed bugs recently, with upmarket sites no more protected than budget hostels.
Despite being blood-suckers, bed bugs are generally harmless, although people can occasionally suffer reactions to bites or develop blood poisoning in some circumstances.
Piccadilly Backpackers, which suffered from a case of bed bugs recently, told the papers: "As you'll know from your research, bugs are usually brought in on baggage; to ensure the optimum levels of prevention are in place we used the market leaders Eco Lab who regularly check the premises and manage the prevention measures."
The bugs can be difficult to eradicate as they leave behind eggs which can be tough to spot and kill. People concerned about bed bugs have the option of buying
worldwide travel insurance as a back-up.
Bed bug eggs take around 20 days to hatch and have reached adulthood in as little as eight weeks, according to easling.gov.uk.
