A leading insurance firm has warned Britons to make sure they secure travel insurance before jetting off on their holidays this year.
Norwich Union conducted a recent poll which has uncovered some worrying trends as people continue to suffer financially under the weight of rising global inflation and the domestic housing slump.
The research suggested that 51 per cent are considering risking not signing up for travel insurance, but the company has urged them not to make such a potentially costly mistake.
Suzi Fenn said: "With more than £60 million paid out in 2007 in insurance claims for everything from medical emergencies to damaged baggage, scrimping on this essential travel cost really isn't worth the risk.
"The reality is that accidents and illnesses do happen on holiday, and you could end up footing an expensive medical bill if you haven't taken out proper cover."
To give some idea of the level of expense that would be involved if an uninsured traveller suffers injury or illness, a broken leg in Cyprus would result in a bill of around £18,000.
