Worldwide travel insurance customers who have paid a trip to Greece may be behind the country's bid to become the world's best tourism destination.
According to the Greek National Tourism Office, the nation is currently fourth on a list of the world's most desirable holiday destinations, but it hopes to secure the top spot.
Sofia Panayiotaki, director of the organisation's UK and Ireland office, said a small fall in visitor numbers in recent months was due primarily to the economic crisis and exchange rates affecting the eurozone countries.
She added that despite the pound's fall against the euro, Greece still offers good value for money to British tourists: "It is a destination that many people can afford and that is one of the reasons why people continue to return to us."
Further optimism came from a Touristic Research Institute statement, which said the downtrend in arrivals was partly offset by a 7.6 per cent rise in visitors to Athens.
