New research has revealed that the UK's demand for European currency has fallen in comparison with places such as Barbados and Thailand.
American Express' foreign exchange currency index suggests that holidaymakers are ditching short breaks and saving their cash for one premium holiday.
Terry Perrin, director of trading and business development at American Express' foreign exchange service, said that booking just one holiday is likely to help recession-hit Brits rein in their spending.
Despite predictions that the swine flu outbreak would hit the tourism sector hard, Mr Perrin said that it had done little long-term damage.
One popular destination was Jamaica, whose currency had risen five places in the foreign exchange index, he added.
A survey by the Association of British Travel Agents recently indicated that sending postcards is still a more popular form of communication when on holiday than texts or emails.
The research predicted that more than 130 million cards would be sent this year, in the UK alone.
