Cheap travel insurance could benefit visitors to 'best tourist destination'

Backpacker travel insurance could benefit people planning a journey through the UK, described by a VisitBritain executive as "the best tourist destination in the world."

Brian Donoghue, head of government and public affairs at VisitBritain, said that the level of diversity on offer and the mix of history and contemporary life across the UK make it one of the leading destinations on the planet.

In 2007, Britain was the sixth most popular destination among global travellers, according to research from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.

Commenting on the ranking, Mr Donoghue said: "That is due to our landscape, our heritage, our history, the fact that we are modern as well as traditional, that we have been the birthplace of the original modern city and that we have led the way in terms of fashion, design, creativity and music."

He added that Britain makes a big impact in the world despite being smaller than Lake Erie in North America.

The Office for National Statistics reveals a two per cent increase in the number of visitors to Britain from mainland Europe in August, September and October of 2008.
