Visiting family abroad for Christmas or taking in some winter sun are just a couple of ways
backpacker travel insurance customers could help to rescue the aviation industry.
According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), Christmas travel is more important than ever to the outbound tourism industry.
A spokesperson for the organisation said: "The last 12 months has been the worst year for the travel industry for years, with many tour operators being between 25 and 40 per cent down on their usual business."
He explained that many operators had been hoping for a surge in demand during the late summer sale period, but many holidaymakers decided to stay at home.
The Unite union recently announced the possibility of a strike by British Airways staff over the Christmas period.
A strike would do little to endear the firm to travellers and the industry, added the AITO spokesperson, following recent cuts to commission and tax rises.
