A travel journalist has commented that the credit crunch has led to more Brits forsaking foreign holidays in favour of short UK city breaks.
Russell Amerasekera believes that Brits have got less money to spend on "things that we look at as a luxury".
Mr Ameraskera also thinks that people have "woken up" to the fact that you don't need to go so far away to have a good time.
He said: "Places like Birmingham have invested a huge amount of money in developing the infrastructure so whether it is the budget hotel, or the five star hotel or the boutique hotel there are loads of options for people.
"Also, if you look at the pound against the euro it has discouraged a lot of people from doing the traditional thing and getting on a plane and going off to places like Spain."
