Online travel insurance policyholders with a green conscience may prefer to travel by train or boat, after hearing one environmentalist say airlines' green policies are doing little to offset carbon emissions.
Green organisation the Aviation Environment Federation claims airports' efforts to create new eco initiatives are significantly outweighed by the emissions produced by planes.
The federation's policy and communications officer Cait Weston said the savings provided by better recycling and wind turbines are "dwarfed" by the impact of flights themselves.
She noted that while operators are happy to talk about the technical possible of using biofuels in aircraft "no one seems able to explain how they could be produced on a wide enough scale to meet the needs of a growing, fuel-hungry sector".
Britons should consider taking more holidays closer to home, growing more of their own food and replacing business travel with more teleconferencing.
