European cities are still a favourite for Britons hoping to snatch a short weekend getaway, according to travel association ABTA.
Frances Tuke, spokeswoman for the organisation, said: "For short breaks, France and Spain are popular for obvious reasons but Belgium for Brussels is very popular too."
Ms Tuke added that while such locations remain popular, they are still being affected by the exchange rate.
"We've seen a growth in travel to destinations outside the eurozone and we have seen a contraction in the market for western Europe this year but still those destinations are the most popular due to sheer volume," she noted.
Her comments follow the release of new research from Visa Europe, which found that 60 per cent of those polled were booking a beach break and 36 per cent were booking city breaks.
