The Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) has today (August 8th) issued a travel warning for Bolivia.
With South America now becoming an increasingly popular destination for gap year travellers and backpackers to explore, the latest advice update is particularly relevant.
There are considerable political tensions and security concerns in the country ahead of this Sunday's referendum on the future of President Evo Morales.
The altiplano areas of Potosi and Oruro have been witness to violent demonstrations this week and the FCO is advising anyone in the region to avoid large crowds over the weekend.
The potential for violence is not just confined to these areas, however, and British travellers in cities are also being warned to be vigilant, with road blockades and restricted airport access also possible.
In addition, there will be no alcohol on sale, no private vehicles or public transport on the roads and domestic flights have been suspended until Monday at midday.
The FCO's advice has also been echoed by the US Embassy in La Paz, while ensuring you have a backpacker travel insurance package in place is also a must.
