Backpackers and people planning to travel to China for the Olympics are being urged to check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's (FCO) updated travel advice for the country.
There were two explosions on buses in the south-western town of Kunming on Monday (July 21st), with two deaths and 17 injuries being reported.
In addition, the south-east of the country has been hit by a severe tropical storm which has caused major structural damage and 19 deaths in Taiwan.
Such unforeseen circumstances further highlight the importance of travel insurance for anyone heading to China over the coming weeks and months, particularly with the tropical cyclone season lasting until November.
The FCO is also advising travellers to avoid the Beichuan, Dujiangyan, Mianyang and Wenchuan regions of Sichuan Province - which were ravaged by the recent earthquake - unless a journey is absolutely essential.
In relation to August's Games in Beijing, travellers have been warned that 'stop and search' measures will be in place, while they must also register with the local Public Security Bureau with 24 hours of their arrival in the country.
