The UK Foreign Office has issued a warning to British travellers who may be looking to head to provinces in the far south of Thailand.
There has been an uprising of violence in Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla as insurgents attempt to sabotage railway networks and other forms of public transport.
Four people were killed on June 21st aboard a train from Sugai Kolok to Yala when six gunmen opened fire between Tanyong Mas and Marue Bue stations.
While passengers were unhurt, a railway police officer and cleaning staff were among the dead, according to police officials in the area.
After the gunmen fled the train, another gang of rebels lying in wait also opened fire on the carriages, causing major panic among the 100 people on board.
The incident, in addition to recent bomb blasts in Pattani and the Krong Pinang district, have forced a considerable programme of tightened security to be launched in the affected provinces.
The Foreign Office urges avoiding all but the most essential travel to the areas, but with violent demonstrations also taking place in Bangkok, travellers would be well advised to ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance if they are visiting Thailand.
