Holidaymakers going online for cheap deals could also buy cheap travel insurance

Those disappointed by the UK's recent bad weather and looking for a trip to sunnier climes will find that searching online offers more choice and lower prices while requiring less effort, says a travel industry professional.

Egor Bondarev, marketing director at Orangesmile.com, said that searching online offers "cheaper rates, there is no need to get up from the sofa and go to a travel agency, there is a much wider choice than at a travel agency and there is no need to make fast decisions, as is often the case in travel shops".

Mr Bondarev added that women are likely to make the highest number of bookings as they are most often in charge of organising family holidays.

Last month saw online travel agency Expedia.co.uk report a sharp rise in the number of people looking for long haul destinations.

Enquiries about Thailand were up 165 per cent while the number of those asking about Hong Kong was up 122 per cent.
