According to travel advice site TripAdvisor, such sites offer an ideal way for travellers to discover more about destinations before they get there.
Travel operator Direct Holidays recently launched its own site, the bigpicturedirect.co.uk, where hotels or resorts that receive consistently poor reviews can be excluded from the firm's brochures.
Commenting on the news, Amelie Hurst, spokesperson for TripAdvisor, said: "Travellers certainly have an increasing desire to share their own experiences through review sites it's the modern day equivalent of returning from a holiday and calling up your friends to tell them all about it."
She added that review sites are an invaluable piece of "market research" for any business, allowing them to identify strengths and weaknesses and improve their service.
