British holidaymakers mulling over where they are going to jet off to for their summer holidays have been urged to consider Hong Kong as a very real option.
The glamorous venue with its spectacular harbour, multitude of skyscrapers and huge range of shops, bars and restaurants is often overlooked as a potential destination for a short-term break.
The main gripe has traditionally been that it is too expensive, but a new guide has suggested that low-season hotel rates in the summer make now an attractive time to head there.
The report, on travel website Travelbite.co.uk, explains: "If you're thinking a holiday in Hong Kong sounds expensive, think again - the savvy visitor can find plenty of spots to pick up a bargain, while many of the most interesting things to do and see cost nothing at all."
The guide claims that some hostels can be found for around £7 per night, while many retail outlets sell high-class items for good prices as part of summer sales.
The free activities are part of the tourism board's 'Cultural Kaleidoscope' programme, and include tai chi classes on the Kowloon side of the harbour, plus learning the basics of fung shui, the rituals of Chinese tea-making or even kung fu.
