Heading off on a summer break is always an exciting affair and can dominate people's thoughts as they countdown to jetting off abroad.
With the expected deluge of British holidaymakers to the continent and further afield, Defaqto has issued a warning about the dangers of becoming too consumed by the prospect of a holiday.
The independent finance company has suggested that in the midst of the anticipation, particularly for last-minute breaks, basic checks for things like travel insurance can be overlooked.
Furthermore, many holidaymakers may head off without realising that their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) does not provide them with full cover.
Brian Brown, head of insight at the company, said: "You should also remember that EHIC cards only apply in European Union countries, so destinations like Turkey are not covered.
"You should take your travel insurance policy with you so you know who to contact in an emergency. And always keep copies of receipts as you will need them if you need to make a claim."
Gappers heading away to far flung corners of the globe are also being warned to ensure they obtain a backpacker insurance policy and read all the details to fully understand their cover.
