'More Brits' are choosing to get married abroad

The editor of Brides Magazine has hit out at official figures that say less Brits are getting married and commented that more are getting married abroad.

Thea Darricotte, executive retail editor at Conde Nast Brides magazine, retorted: "The government is always spewing out figures about how weddings are in decline, but actually that is because they don't take weddings abroad into account."

So does the wedding expert think that it is a sense of romantic adventure that is causing more Brits to choose to get spliced on foreign shores?

Not really. Ms Darricotte said: "In times of the credit crunch it makes a lot of sense to go and get married in places like Italy where you can have the best wine, the best food, and not pay the maximum price for them."

Recent research from Halifax found that the Caribbean is the top choice for those getting hitched abroad with popular eloping destination Gretna Green Britain's sole representative in fifth place.

No one can insure you against the many risks of getting married but if you do take the plunge outside Britain it is best to shop around for cheap travel insurance and only say "I do" to the best value offers.

Going, going, gone. Downunder for cheap travel insurance.
