New research has suggested today (July 28th) that nearly one in ten Britons have had their wallet or purse stolen while abroad.
In a finding which underlines the importance of having travel insurance when overseas, Tesco revealed that nine per cent of people have been victims of this crime.
Furthermore, the problem is increasingly pertinent for younger travellers, with 23.8 per cent of those aged 18 and under having fallen prey to opportunist thieves.
The situation has forced some holidaymakers to take drastic measures to outwit pickpockets, with four per cent admitting to stuffing money in their underwear and one in ten claiming to use 'bum bags', which went out of fashion in the late '80s.
The study also showed that poor security at hotels is playing a part in travellers' woes, with over seven per cent of respondents claiming to have had items stolen from safes or room deposit boxes.
The survey of 2,000 travellers was commissioned by Tesco Travel Money Card to learn more about the holiday habits of Britons.
