Britain remains gripped by the tumultuous economy but the weak pound has proved inviting for many overseas tourists, according to Philip Green, chairman of tourism organisation UKinbound.
Mr Green said that despite the resilience of the UK tourist economy, government help was still needed to lend a helping hand and the £6.5 million being spent by VisitBritain was dwarfed by the quantities spent by other countries in the world.
The chairman told the UKinbound Convention: "We are resilient, innovative and sensible and this could be a problem as the government sees us as able to cope by ourselves."
He added that tourism was the fifth largest sector in the UK economy and as a result was likely to receive greater consideration from the government.
January figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that overseas residents in the UK spent £16 billion in Britain throughout the course of 2007.
