Britons won't be needing their passports for holidays this summer because they are being replaced by a good old bucket and spade, according to a new survey.
Research from insurance and investment group LV= has shown that with families concerned about their financial situations as the credit crunch bites, an increasing number will turn to a traditional seaside break in Britain.
The results of the study, released today (July 25th), show that 71 per cent of parents have money worries and that as a result, 58 per cent will be taking the kids on holiday in the UK.
But holidaymakers have been warned that although they may not be going abroad, they should not think that safety becomes less of a priority, or that they will not need travel insurance.
Mark Smith, director of tourism at Bournemouth Borough Council, said: "With more and more families choosing to holiday in the UK, Bournemouth's 'Blue Flag' beaches and miles of golden sand make it a top UK summer destination.
"And being such a popular spot for parents and children, safety is a key concern to ensure that everyone's time spent at the seaside is a happy experience."
The research also showed that families can save up to 38 per cent by deciding against heading to traditional holiday destinations such as Greece, Majorca and the Algarve.
